Don't know when I'd last seen The Hustler, but it's been too goddamned long. How perfect everything and everyone is in that flick. Misdirectional dialogue that cuts both ways, huge fitting silences wherein people get sized up, sewed in. So smart and serious and sad. And in such a boys' flick, everything's a game and everyone's a toy, all bottles and stickwork, how fucking great and real is Piper Laurie's broken angel? I've known that woman, I'm sure you have too, I've known a few of her.
Is anyone making stuff like this now? Because I need to know it's out there. Something with purpose and intelligence but without pride or irony or cleverness, something that succeeds at style without succumbing to technique? Something that feels made of men, not of movies?
